Ms. Stephanie Middleton, a World History and Advanced Placement Human Geography teacher at the Professional and Technical High School (PATHS), was named Osceola County School District’s Teacher of the Year for 2014.
In the classroom, Ms. Middleton has distinguished herself as an innovative teacher, inspiring her students to actively engage in learning. Ms. Middleton has become a leader at integrating technology in the classroom by allowing students to take part in the new district BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) program, hooking up to the internet for classroom use on their own mobile devices. Her instructional methods translate into higher test scores for her students, including AP exam scores that are higher than the national average.
In addition to bringing so much to the classroom, Ms. Middleton also takes education a step further with the GLOCAL Club. In this club, students discuss world problems and ways they can “be the change” in the world. An important part of the club is community service. Here at the Osceola County Historical Society, Ms. Middleton and the GLOCAL Club have become very important event volunteers.
At every major event we put on, you can bet Ms. Middleton’s students are here volunteering. They are a huge help at the Dine with the Departed, Haunted Halloween, Pioneer Days and even summer camp. Not only are the students extremely reliable, but Ms. Middleton comes out to the events as well to show her support. We know if we have her in charge of an area, her and her students have got it covered. While they are volunteering, the students are also getting exposed to area history. Anytime local teens are engaged in history, it’s a huge win for everyone.
GLOCAL Club members have volunteered an estimated 750 hours of their time since they began working with the Osceola Historical Society in 2012, and if it weren’t for Ms. Middleton and her dedication to history in education these hours might not have been logged. The Osceola Historical Society would like to congratulate Ms. Middleton on being named teacher of the year!
