Anza Bast has been involved with the Osceola County Historical Society for over 10 years, she is a dedicated volunteer and board member who received this year’s Florida Association of Museums Outstanding Volunteer award. Anza is an invaluable resource for OCHS. Her wealth of regional knowledge and her passion for history have made her an incredible asset to the organization. Anza volunteers most of her time in the Curation and Collection Department. Larissa Bixby caught up with Anza at the Research Center at Spence Pavilion one afternoon to chat a bit about her contributions to OCHS.

Each year, the Florida Association of Museums honors those who help museums fulfill their individual missions. One such honor, the Outstanding Volunteer Award is given to a “volunteer whose service to a museum has made a lasting impact on the fulfillment of the institution’s mission”. Osceola County Historical Society has many wonderful volunteers and, as a result, decided to nominate one of them: Anza Bast.

History is happening every day, the Narcoossee Area Chapter of the Osceola County Historical Society made history of their own at the Florida Trust for Historic Preservation's 40th Annual Conference in Jacksonville, FL, The chapter received an Outstanding Achievement Award from The Florida Trust for Historic Preservation, recognizing the circa 1886 Narcoossee Schoolhouse project.

This month’s spotlight is all about OCHS Curator and Collections Manager, Kayla Smith. Kayla began working at the Osceola County Historical Society as a volunteer in 2016 before she took the position as Curator on her birthday that same year. She spends her free time with her husband, Paul, and their son. She enjoys exploring the outdoors and teaching her son about the world. Kayla spoke with Program Director, Larissa Bixby; let’s see what she said:
